Abstract This project explored long-term health and quality-of-life implications of crashes among older and middle-age motor vehicle occupants in Connecticut and Indiana. Analysts compared outcomes of a sample of older (65+) injured occupants with those of a sample of similarly involved yet uninjured older occupants in Connecticut. The results, as measured by the eight SF-36 Health Survey scales, indicated that the injured had substantial health decrements approximately two years following the crash. Analyses of cases from Indiana included older (65+) injured occupants as well as middle-age (40-55) injured occupants. Both groups showed continuing health decrements approximately 15 months following the crash, particularly among occupants whose injuries required hospitalization. Although older and middle-age injured occupants showed similar physical effects, the middle-age group showed greater quality-of-life decrements.
