| Abstract | The problem addressed in this report is a transportation problem--Given that a volume of heavy tracked vehicles must be moved from storage and maintenance locations to field training and other locations, what is the best way to move them? The options are to drive them, carry them by heavy equipment transporters (HETs), or carry them by railroad. Within each of these options are several variations, generating a total of roughly 10 alternatives for evaluation. The analysis suggests that tracked vehicles in general, and the M1 tank in particular, are so costly to operate in a self-powered mode that almost any method for transporting them will save enough in tracked vehicle operating costs and depreciation to be worthwhile. Whether the preferred mode is HET or rail may depend upon considerations lying outside this analysis, but the weight of evidence thus far tends to favor HETs as the more cost-effective altenative. |
