Abstract Although the current crew rest and duty restrictions for commercial space transportation remain in place, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) continues to review the regulation on a regular basis for validity and efficacy based on input from scientific and operational communities. As a result, the FAA in cooperation with the Volpe Center and Aerospace Corporation commissioned Clemson University to review the scientific literature pertaining to crew rest and duty restrictions and to provide recommendations for those involved in commercial space transportation. This report reviews the scientific literature with regard to sleep, fatigue, and shift work. A selected review of existing crew rest and duty restrictions for the aviation industry is also reported. Recommendations are made for suborbital and orbital crew rest and duty based upon our current understanding of sleep, fatigue, and shift work.
