| Abstract | From November 1979 through October 1981, the Rideshare Project, an agency of the Tri-County Metropolitan District of Oregon, conducted a demonstration of activities designed to promote commuter ridesharing. The demonstration elements comprised: 1) expanded marketing of employer-based ridesharing promotion; 2) promotion of owner-operated vanpools; and 3) analysis of institutional barriers and incentives to ridesharing. These activities were carried out under the Ride share Project's ongoing work program with supplementary funding from the Urban Mass Transportation Administration, the Federal Highway Administration, and the Office of the Secretary of Transportation, under the National Ridesharing Demonstration Program. This case study report evaluates the achievements of the demonstration's rideshare marketing and incentives development activities and the effects of these efforts on employer sponsorship of ridesharing and employee travel behavior. Evaluation is based upon grantee project records and reports, and upon results of a post-demonstration survey of area employers and employees. Special emphasis is placed on the institutional context and experience of the demonstration elements for their transferability to other locales. |
