Abstract The Highway Driving Simulator (HDS) was recently upgraded to a six-degrees-of-freedom motion-base system. The objective of the upgrade was to enhance the realism of the simulator. A motion-base-tuning process ensured that the new motion-base system enhanced the realism of the simulator. This report describes the tuning of the motion base and adjusting of the simulator system functions in the HDS’s six-degrees-of-freedom motion-base system. The tuned configuration, in conjunction with the other systems, produces an immersive and realistic driving simulation that will support human factors evaluations for highway design.
