Abstract Traffic signal backplates—thin plates of material that surround traffic signal indication light arrays—are intended to improve the visibility of a traffic signal by providing a consistent and controlled-contrast background. Attempts to further enhance the visibility and conspicuity of traffic signals have led to the addition of narrow strips of retroreflective tape or sheeting around the border of the backplates. This combination—called backplates with retroreflective borders—frames the signal indication, enhances the visibility and conspicuity of the traffic signal indications, and ultimately leads to fewer crashes at signalized intersections.
