Abstract Steel bridge bearings may be divided into three general types: elastomeric bearings, high-load multi-rotational bearings, and mechanical bearings. The designer must determine which bearing type is best suited to cost effectively accommodate the design requirements. This module provides practical information for efficient bearing design and detailing. The information contained in this module is drawn largely from the following two sources - National Steel Bridge Alliance's (NSBA's) “Steel Bridge Bearing Selection and Design Guide,” Highway Structures Design Guide, Volume II, Chapter 4 (Highway Structures Design Handbook Volume II, Chapter 4)) and American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO)/NSBA Steel Bridge Collaboration, G9.1-2004 “Steel Bridge Bearing Design and Detailing Guidelines.”
Public Note The previous version of this Handbook was published as FHWA-IF-12-052 and was developed to be current with the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, 5th Edition with the 2010 Interims. FHWA-HIF-16-002 was updated in 2015 by HDR, Inc., to be current with the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, 7th Edition.
