| Abstract | This guidebook reviews the state-of-the-practice of statewide travel forecasting. It focuses on those techniques that have been considered essential to good statewide travel forecasting and presents specialized and advanced techniques of potential interest to persons involved in statewide travel forecasting. There are many facets of statewide travel forecasting and it is not possible to create a one-size-fits-all model to deal with every possible situation, and this guidebook advocates the need to select the technique that is most applicable to the problem; in some cases a simple growth factor model may be preferable to a full network analysis of the whole state. A distinction is made between urban and statewide travel forecasting. Although there are similarities in theory, the differences in implementation are quite important. Although references are made to travel forecasting software, no guidelines are provided for any particular software, nor are the recommended techniques dependent upon the capabilities of any specific software package. |
