Abstract Three phases typically occur in the development of a concrete mixture: specifying, designing, and proportioning. Specifying refers to the requirements contained in the contract documents with regards to performance requirements for the fresh and hardened concrete. Mixture design is the process of selecting mixture characteristics for the intended use and to meet the specification requirements. Finally, mixture proportioning entails the selection of proportions of available materials to produce economical concrete that meets the required specification parameters, design properties, and considers material sustainability. This Tech Brief describes each phase, providing succinct guidance while providing sources for more detailed information.
