Abstract Generally, reduced left-turn conflict intersections are geometric designs that lessen the number or severity of potential vehicle-to-vehicle conflicts associated with left-turn movements. Two of these highly effective intersection designs are included in this FHWA Proven Safety Countermeasure—the restricted crossing U-turn (RCUT) and the median U-turn (MUT). In addition to modifying conflict points, these designs simplify driver decisions, reduce intersection congestion and delay, and minimize the potential for related crashes. For the RCUT and the MUT, the main intersection and the designated U-turn locations may be signalized or unsignalized.
