| Abstract | This report presents the results of a review of the literature on the state of the art for measurement of transport properties (such as permeability and sorptivity) of Portland cement concrete in the laboratory and in the field. This work is part of a research project sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) on the relationship between concrete transport properties and durability. The results of this literature review were used to develop a research approach and testing guidelines for the project. The literature review indicates that field tests for transport properties are greatly influenced by the moisture conditions of the concrete, and that adequate means of assessing in-situ moisture content are not available. Therefore, the approach adopted will use field cores, which will be pre-conditioned and tested in the laboratory. The results of these tests will be used to develop a model relating sorptivity to damage from several degradation phenomena, including sulfate attack and freezing and thawing. |
