Abstract This report describes an evaluation of the effects of increased crashworthiness performance on high-speed train weight. The crashworthiness features investigated include occupied volume strength, energy absorption systems, seats, and fire protection systems. In each case, a baseline model was developed to represent the high-speed train subsystem. The baseline models were then modified to improve crashworthiness, and the incremental weight associated with these changes was also calculated. Finite element analysis was used to conduct the calculations. The results indicated that significant weight increases would occur by imposing the 8g/250 ms American Public Transportation Association crash pulse requirement for seat testing. Changes to the other features resulted in weight increases, but these were not as substantial as for seats.
