| Abstract | On September 9-10, 1993, FHWA and the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy sponsored a workshop entitled "Metropolitan America in Transition: Implications for Land Use and Transportation Planning." As a follow-on to an FHWA seminar on transportation implications of "edge city" development patterns held a year earlier ("Edge City and ISTEA -- So what?"), the workshop had a dual focus: a) to identify the range and scope of policy issues associated with coordinated land use and transportation planning; and b_ to prepare an agenda of research and program activities to advance the state of knowledge on the topic. Workshop themes included identifying emerging growth trends and assessing their impacts on mobility and various other social, economic, and environmental quality-of-life aspects in metropolitan America. The nearly 100 invited participants represented a diversity of professions and perspectives, including Federal, State, and local government, business, and the development community. Attendees engaged in both plenary and small group discussions to identify the full scope and dimension of these issues and determine the need and rationale for intervention to effect change. |
