Abstract The Benefits of Bicycling and Walking to Health is one of a series of reports mandated by the National Bicycling and Walking Study. The major emphasis of this report is to provide information on the potential health benefits and deleterious health effects accruing to individuals and the nation as a whole while engaging in bicycling and walking. This document is intended to assist officials and citizens in determining current levels of use of bicycling and walking, to give reasons why bicycling and walking are not used more for transportation and recreation in the United States, and to show the health economic costs and benefits of promoting these activities for health and fitness. The document indicates how interest in bicycling and walking may be increased through safety education, improved employer relationships, and pedestrian heightened awareness of this right to travel in a healthy environment.
