Abstract This publication is a summary of the 1993 report to Congress entitled The Status of the Nation's Highways, Bridges, and Transit: Conditions and Performance. Our Nation's productivity and international competitiveness depends on fast and reliable transportation. As we move toward the 21st century, the status of our highways, bridges and transit is of paramount importance to the vitality of our economy. Americans travel roads and highways more of then than any other mode of transportation. Highways, along with the automobiles, buses, and trucks they carry, have provided the United States with an efficient network for moving people and goods, carrying more than 90 percent of all travel, and three-quarters of the value of all goods and services produced. Growth and productivity in virtually every sector of the Nation's economy depend upon adequate transportation.
