Abstract Transportation corridor preservation is: ... a concept utilizing the coordinated application of various measures to obtain control of or otherwise protect right-of-way for a planned transportation facility. Corridor preservation techniques should be applied as early as possible after the transportation corridor is identified either along a new alignment, or along an existing facility to: - prevent inconsistent development - minimize or avoid environmental, social and economic impacts; - reduce displacement; - prevent the foreclosure of desirable location options; - minimize or avoid environmental, social, and economic impacts; - permit orderly project development; and - reduce costs [...] This study reviews the background of current interest in corridor preservation and examines experience in nine States engaged in preservation activities: Arizona, California, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Nevada, North Carolina, Oregon, and Utah. It provides guidelines, based on that experience, to transportation officials who must determine priorities for corridors to preserver, allocation of resources to preservation activity, and strategies for presrvation efforts.
