Abstract The purpose of this project will be to mitigate third-party pipeline damage at the earliest stages through the development and commercialization of a geospatial probe to map existing buried utilities through insertion into live gas pipelines. This probe will be capable of mapping live underground pipes 3-dimensionally and provide precise locations of utilities. Additionally, a cloud-based data collection system will be created using Esri web application tools to collect, store, and view the mapping data making it easily accessible to a utility's GIS (Geographic Information Systems). The project team will design a bespoke solution based on the existing Reduct "Ductrunner" technology, which currently can accurately determine the x, y and z position of a non-pressurized pipeline to map the location of live natural gas mains accurately. A new access fitting will be designed to allow the live-gas mapping probe to enter live natural gas pipelines through a hot tap entry system. This hot tap entry system will allow access into the pipeline to perform mapping without blowing natural gas or interrupting service to downstream customers. Once an initial prototype is created, it will be thoroughly tested with a mock set up at GTI's Des Plaines, IL facility. Once a fully functional field prototype is ready, the project team will travel to three different local utilities across the US for field testing before commercializing the product.
