| Abstract | The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), in its role as the lead agency within the U.S. Government for all Federal civilian Global Positioning System (GPS) matters, is cooperating with other departments, including the Department of Defense (DOD) and the Department of Commerce (DOC). Together, we are coordinating U.S. Government-provided GPS civilian augmentation systems and improving the basic GPS service to civilian users. As an integral part of these efforts, we fully support the wise and beneficial investments requested by the President for the Nationwide Differential Global Positioning System (NDGPS) and the provision of new civilian GPS signals. The DOT approach to leadership for these projects is based on requirements. The President’s budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2000 requests funding for these endeavors solely within the DOT budget. We appreciate the opportunity to provide this information and are confident that this report will aid Congress in making the best choices for America. |
