Abstract The Federal Highway Administration is investigating narrowing freeway lanes and shoulders as a cost-effective mobility strategy. The objectives of this project were to develop improved macroscopic analysis tools, calibrate car-following models that capture narrowed lane driving behavior, conduct real-world case studies, develop narrowed lanes deployment recommendations, and investigate dynamic lane-narrowing technologies. The case studies showed that the lane-narrowing treatment improves mobility significantly without compromising safety.
