Abstract Police Traffic Division statistics for Jamaica (the largest English speaking island in the Caribbean) were reviewed for the years 1985 - 1990. Data revealed that the majority of fatal accidents occurred between 3 and 6 pm (23 percent) and involved mainly pedestrians (44 percent). Vulnerable road users (pedestrians, motor and pedal cyclists along with their passengers) accounted for 65 percent of fatalities. The month of December accounted for the highest proportion of fatalities (11 percent). Fatalities and injuries were concentrated around the metropole namely Kingston & St. Andrew and St. Catherine (>40 percent of fatalities and injuries). Some factors contributing to this scenario were identified.
