Abstract This paper reports the results of an investigation on the use of the covercrete absorption test (CAT) as an in-situ technique for assessing the near-surface permeation properties of concrete. Highlighted are some of the better known permeation test methods for in-situ concrete and the reasons for selecting CAT for this experiment as opposed to other methods. The CAT can be sensitive to variations in water/cement ratio and curing time, moisture content at the time of test, and surface orientation, as revealed in the results of the tests performed in the laboratory on laboratory cast samples. Good correlations between covercrete absorption and other durability index parameters were observed for the laboratory samples; however, the correlations were poor or absent when applied to in-situ tests on mature concrete structures. The authors conclude that permeation methods have little value for assessing the quality and state of durability of concrete structures.
