| Abstract |
Real-time or dynamic rideshare matching is defined as a one-time match obtained for a one-way trip either the same day or the evening before. Real-time ridesharing attempts to utilize empty seats in private automobiles to accommodate travelers who may require an occasional ride when their own automobile is unavailable, or to supplement conventional carpooling arrangements. While real-time ridesharing has been touted as one of the possible solutions to reduce congestion and improve the efficiency of travel, it has yet to find its niche as a marketable and viable travel option. Several field operational tests (F.O.T.s) of real-time ridesharing have been completed, and several more are under way. The Sacramento-Area Real-Time Rideshare Matching Field Operational Test was developed to address a primary criticism of ridesharing - that ridesharing is a commute mode which requires significant planning and lacks the flexibility associated with other commuting alternatives such as solo driving. This F.O.T. was completed in July 1995, and evaluated with respect to its feasibility for application on a region-wide basis. In summary, the Sacramento F.O.T. was unsuccessful due to a number of factors that included the personal safety concerns of travelers, inadequate marketing of the service insufficient interest and opportunities to real-time rideshare. Recommendations derived from experiences in this F.O.T. are provided for future implementations of real-time ridesharing |
